July 2021

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

I hope you’re all enjoying the Euros and are looking forward to tomorrow’s big game; Ukraine vs Sweden has the makings of an all-time classic. Boom-tish!

Joking aside, the other game is a big one, too. Particularly for England. Germany have three even bigger games to play after tomorrow.

But seriously, it’s the first time in ages when England are firm favourites against Germany. For a plethora of reasons. three days more rest since the start of the tournament, no travel disruption, UEFA not wanting Wembley to be empty for the final and the refs being instructed to whistle accordingly, and most importantly: Germany are still managed/held back by Joachim Löw.

This might be the seventh tournament he doesn’t win. An unparalleled record!

And that’s the beauty of tomorrow’s contest. Either Germany go through or it’s Jogi’s last ever game in charge of Nationalmannschaft. It’s a win-win situation.

Best of all I’ll be there to witness it! Thanks to travel restrictions to Boris Island getting tickets via the German FA is easier than ever. In a way it is, anyway. In another way it’s more palaver than travelling to the moon. Bye-bye physical tickets, hello mobile phone ticket app, lateral flow test app and staged half-hour arrival slots. No more worrying about losing your ticket. Now the main concern is for one’s phone not to run out of power.

Steve Jobs (from down below), Bill Gates and their mates are laughing their evil heads off when they see what society has turned itself into. And I’m aware of the irony of me complaining about the overreliance on IT in a bulletin that’s being sent out as an email.

Gone are the days when you had to sign up by letter to the David Hasselhoff Fan Club and would receive a photocopied missive once per quarter. In those days, the early 80s, Germany had only won the World Cup twice and also had only two European Championships to their name. It’s hard to imagine these days but that’s exactly how it was.

Enjoy tomorrow’s game and may the better team win!

Henning
