Infrequent Bulletin – August 2025

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

I hope we’re all having yet another delightful summer of discontent / summer of thuggery / summer of legitimate concerns.

Last year’s argy-bargy started in Southport before it spread across the country. This year it was all go in Ballymena, followed by Epping. Shortly it will be everywhere again.

The sooner Keir Starmer admits immigration and most other issues are unsolvable the better.

He’d be better off focusing all his energy on making sure the domestic football season follows the Scandinavian model and runs from early spring until late autumn; crucially without any time off in summer. What Britain needs is goals, goals, goals all summer!!

Just like every year public unrest will calm down once the Football League is underway as rioters then have got other things to get excited and angry about.

Admittedly, FIFA tried their bit for world peace but the Club World Cup just wasn’t cutting it. Two of England’s most boring clubs travelling to the USA to play teams from Saudi Arabia. I’m afraid that doesn’t stop anyone hurling bricks at the Old Bill. If anything, it makes it more likely.

Same goes for the women’s Euros. It’s good to watch…if you’re new to the game. If you have been watching football forever, I’m afraid, it’s not quite doing it. Unsurprisingly. Men had more than 100 years to get the game to the level it’s being played at now. It’s ridiculous to expect the women’s game to do the same in barely any time.

Gail Emms has written a cracking book, The Forgotten Lionesses, about the inofficial Women’s World Cup in Mexico in 1971, when a side, including her mum, decided to represent England. On their return they got slaughtered by the press and banned by the FA for their audacity. In Germany things were no better. Women weren’t allowed to play at all until 1970.

Fast forward a few decades and it’s probably gone slightly too far the other way. I understand BBC and ITV have to big up what they’re showing but telling me what I’m watching is of great quality when it objectively is not, is a bit tedious. One day it might well be great, but that day hasn’t arrived yet.

It’s like saying Jake Wood and my podcast is world class when in reality we’re still trying to figure out how to mix the sound properly… By the way: thank you very much for listening!! There’s a new episode out every Monday. All past and future episodes can be found here: https://www.woodwehn.com/podcast/

Enjoy the weather and enjoy Sunday’s final!! It’s coming home etc etc..

Henning
