Infrequent Bulletin – January 2026

Dear Friends of German Comedy,

I hope you’ve had a good month. So far. But we all know the most difficult part of the month is yet to come. I wish I could give you some uplifting news as to how it’ll be mid-January before long and Christmas no more than a distant nightmare.

But I’m not going to lie – there’s going to be a lot of aggravation until then. You only know you’re coming out the other side when it’s New Year’s Eve and the German TV schedule is dominated by nonstop Dinner for One across the various channels.

We also have the World Cup to look forward to! Mind you, the draw was enough to put you off the whole thing. Watching FIFA give Trump some ‘peace prize’ and then seeing him hang the medal round his own neck was all too much. Even if you go to bed in a MAGA hat, you can’t be watching that bloke’s antics and think he’s of sound mind.

I understand the Yanks are a different breed, and bragging and being a simpleton is part of their national DNA, but surely even they can see their president has less intellectual capacity than the turkey he pardoned a few days ago. (I wouldn’t normally be this blunt but this paragraph saves me thousands of pounds as it blocks me from entering the country and then being shafted for tickets. Right result!!)

Anyway, I found this old clip of Gus Brown and me singing Away In A German Manger. It’s very Christmassy! It was filmed at Leicester Square Theatre in 2014. I hope you enjoy it! Annoyingly it’s portrait rather than landscape but there’s no young person nearby I can ask to sort it out. Well, it is what it is!
