Let’s hope you’ve had a sufficiently enjoyable start to 2012.

I just got back from a few days skiing in the Swiss Alps. Don’t worry – it was less posh than it sounds. I slept in a dorm and the hostel’s chef was a Wetherspoon reject.

But there’s no denying I’m getting old. When skiing down a closed run in the past I always thought “Let’s hope I don’t end up in an avalanche”. These days I’m thinking: “Let’s hope I don’t end up in an avalanche. Particularly not on this closed run as I’m sure I would lose my insurance cover.”

A stupid notion as we all know insurance companies never pay for anything but their own lawyers no matter what.

As you can probably tell, I didn’t write much new material over my holiday, but I was told a great pub joke.

Here goes: A busy motorway and a high-speed train track are sitting in a pub…[yes, I know, it sounds a bit surreal but bear with me – it’ll get quite funny, quite quickly] ...anyway, as I said, the motorway and the train track are sitting in the pub, having it large, bragging no end how tough they are and whatnot. Then the pub door opens and something wearingdark sunglasses comes in and they both go very quiet. Asks the barkeeper: “What happened to you two? Have you seen a ghost?” They both reply as one: “We might be tough. But that one over there is a cyclepath.”

Reading it now on screen….well, I’m not so sure anymore – but as Frank Carson says: it’s the way you tell’em.
